‘Art’ at the Old Vic: a short review

Who would have thought that a white painting – a white background with white diagonal stripes – could unravel the friendship between three men? Art is clever, on many levels; it is amusing; and it is raw. Serge is hurt that Marc disapproves of his artistic taste whilst Marc is ashamed of the pretentiousness of Serge. And poor Yvan is caught in the crossfire between his two friends as well within his family in the build up to his wedding.

Of course, the play raises many questions over the value of art and the aura surrounding the name of the artist. Yet above all Art shows an insight into male friendship – a friendship that is often overlooked by writers, as well as by us in everyday life. It questions what bonds the friends, highlights the friction between them, however it shows that they all need each other.

Art is on at the Old Vic, London until 18th February
